Mick, Steve and Felix traveled to Warragul Victoria on the 14th of April for the legendary Mt Baw Baw Classic. Mick and Steve were lining up to race with Felix providing logistical and soigneur support. Mt Baw Baw has long held a special place for Velo Canberra after traveling down there on a number of occasions and picking up some good results including an A Grade win by Mick a few years back.
This year the team was focused on the masters category which included a strong line up of experienced hill climb and road racing specialists.
Racing was fast and fierce from the get go as the peloton made their way along the predominately uphill 100km course. At the first KOM of the day at 50km the field splintered with a small groups forming and then reforming until a selection of four riders made their way clear, including Mick from Velo. On the final brutal climb up Mt Baw Baw the in form Tom Leaper powered away from the break to take out the win. Back in the group Mick was able to distance his companions to collect a very well earned second place. A little further back Steve came home in 8th place after being in one of the earlier breaks.
