NSW Masters Championships

The NSW Masters Championships once again hosted by the Griffith Cycling Club this year. After a well run even last year we were expecting a great event and strong fields yet again.

First up was the road race; with five riders in attendance and three riders racing in M3 we were hoping for a good showing. First up was M4 with Steve, racing solo he was up against a solid field of 34 competitors. Steve had a great ride to collect 4th place in the bunch sprint, a good sign that his form is building nicely.

Next was the M2 road race, again just one Tiffen Cycling starter in this event with Felix. An early break of four managed to hold off the field with Felix placing well in the bunch sprint to pick up 11th place.

In M3, the team fielded three starters (Mick, Ben and Matt) and was our best chance at a medal given the ability to use some strength in numbers. A dangerous break in the closing kilometers threatened to spoil the party but Mick and Ben were able to bring it back and set up Matt for the sprint. Their efforts were rewarded when Matt was able to pick up 2nd in the bunch sprint of 50 riders to collect the teams first medal of the championships.

Day two was the Criterium Championships. Mick was the only starter of the day with the others saving themselves for the Time Trial on day three. Mick backed up his great team ride from the road race to put himself in the break that counted and was able to come in 2nd and pick up the second silver medal for the team.

Day three was for the time trial. This is always a super competitive event among masters riders with some elite level times often posted by former national champions in the bigger events. The NSW champs wasn’t going to be any different this year with a very solid field of TT specialists making the trip to Griffith. Steve was first up in M4 and managed to pick up the bronze medal, in a time not far off TT Guru and well known coach Mark Fenner. In M3 Ben and Mick both posted solid times with Ben in the top 10 and Mick just 10 seconds shy of the Bonze medal.

All in all is was a great weekend of racing for the team with Medals won on each day of the championships.
